An “All Hands” Meeting for those interested in the trip for Newburgh Yacht Club Members to the New York State Canal System will be held following our club’s General Membership Meeting this Friday July 21, 2017. The club meeting begins at 7:00 p.m.
Captain Bob Frederick, Newburgh Yacht Club Member, says the three-day trip to Waterford, NY will take place August 5 , 6 and 7th. That’s a Saturday through Monday.
Club Vice Commodore Ed O’Neill says the trip is designed to safely introduce skippers to the locking-through process.
Here they provide details on the trip:
One of the many experiences available to Hudson River boaters is exploring the New York canal system. Locking through is a unique experience, and it’s not nearly as daunting as many imagine.
On day one, we will depart Newburgh Yacht Club and overnight at Waterford, NY. This section of the trip is a bit over 90 miles, and will include transiting ‘Federal Lock’, also known as ‘Troy Lock’. Federal Lock is just below Waterford, and has a lift of 15-feet. We are planning on overnighting at the Waterford City Dock (technically a wharf or quay), which is just below lock E-2.
On day two, skippers will have the opportunity to lock through Erie Canal locks E2, E3, E4, E5, and E6, or Champlain Canal locks C1 and C2
The five Erie Canal locks are known as ‘the steps’, and offer a more dramatic locking experience than do Federal Lock or the Champlain locks.
On day two we will overnight again at Waterford.
We will depart Waterford early on day three, returning to Newburgh by that evening.
There are several fuel and pump-out opportunities along the route. We’ll discuss them at Float Plan meetings prior to departure.
Total trip mileage, depending on your ‘Day Two’ choices, will be approximately 200 miles.
Any boat with an air draft of less than 20-feet 6-inches can make this trip. This measurement is controlled by vertical clearance at the 112th Street Bridge in Troy, which is located between Federal Lock and Waterford.
Distance from Newburgh Yacht Club to Federal Lock in Troy is 90 miles. Transit time will depend upon your vessel’s comfortable cruise speed.
Duration: Three days. Day One – Newburgh to Waterford; Day Two – Locking through Erie/Champlain locks; Day Three – Return to Newburgh
