September 2, 1932 – April 5, 2023
It is with regret that we report the passing of one of our oldest and longest-time active boating members. John Steinberg, a member of the Newburgh Yacht Club for 47 years, passed away on Wednesday, April 5, at the Montefiore St. Luke’s Hospital in Newburgh. John was 90 years old.
John was a well-known home builder as the owner of Schoonmaker Homes. He graduated from Stanford University, where he was an All-American football player and played in the 1952 Rose Bowl Game. He also graduated from Harvard Business School in 1960 and worked with Wernher von Braun in the US Army’s ballistic missile program. He served as the president of the NY State Home Builders Association and volunteered with the Orange County Industrial Development Agency for 30 years.
John always had a smile and a good word for others. He enjoyed talking about boating and planning for his next boating trip. He loved spending time with his family and friends, skiing, fishing, and relaxing at his vacation home in East Machias, Maine.
He was predeceased by his wife, Ann, in 2017. They both enjoyed coming to our yacht club gatherings and events. His family has decided on a private funeral service, but indicated they are planning a celebration of life to honor John to be held in the near future. They said they will inform us here at the yacht club of any plans for the celebration of life for John, so we can keep our members posted if they would like to attend.
The Quigley-Sullivan Funeral Home is handling the funeral arrangements. You can view the obituary for John Steinberg by using this link: John Steinberg’s Obituary
We extend our deepest condolences to John’s family and friends. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

I only knew John from a few brief meetings, but it was for me to know that this was a man of amazing character, someone that just pulled you right in, he made you feel like you were old friends even if you had just met. Obviously a man of great intellect but he didn’t make it obvious, he addressed everyone with equal importance, he made you feel good about yourself. A huge loss for the club. My condolences to the family, our thoughts and prayers are with you ❤️
