Back then it was the Newburgh Canoe and Boating Association. They were located at the foot of Fourth Street in an almost inaccessible recess of a dock storehouse.
They became known as the “Dock Rats” because of their location. They took the name to heart and for years their club insignia was a white flag with a black rat.
In 1905 the club moved to it’s current location Park Place, known then as the LeRoy Estate. The first event was a formal opening to membership on Memorial Day, May 30, 1905 featuring the annual flag raising and boat regatta.
Today the club continues this tradition with it’s annual “Blessing of the Fleet” .
