The lead boat upon seeing our flag wavers and hearing our cheers gave a loud “Thank You Newburgh” over it’s public address/hailing system.
15 or more boats took part in the flotilla on Saturday afternoon July 12, 2014.
The boats arrived at our club right on time at 1:00 pm. They approached from the south making a wide turn towards our club in front of the Newburgh Beacon Bridge. The boats were flying United States Of America Flags, many also with special military service flags and banners. All the boats had waving guests enjoying the ride on the river and the recognition they were receiving as part of this event.
The guests were Wounded Warriors; Gold Star Families and Purple Heart Veterans aboard the “Salute to Freedom” Flotilla who received a rousing welcome of cheers, waving flags and horns as it passed Commodore’s Point at the Newburgh Yacht Club .
This was all part of a project of the Cortland Yacht Club now in its third year.
Thank you to all of our members who came out to cheer the honored guests.
The pictures for our video presentation were taken by, Edward “Moon” Mullins, and , Jennifer Brenner. Jennifer is the daughter of my wife Ellen and me. I’m glad she also brought her five children, our grandchildren. They did a great job on the flag waving. And they got a boat ride later that day too.
Peggy O'Neill says
Art, thank you so much for participating and rounding up our troops to support our country’s heros. I’m sorry we couldn’t be there. And please thank Jennifer and Moon
for the wonderful photos.
Capt. Brian Young says
I was the organizer of the “Salute to Freedom” that your club so wonderfully participated in. I was the first boat in the flotilla and upon seeing you folks on the waterfront so enthusiastically waving and cheering our honored guest, I couldn’t wait to get closer so that our military and their families could appreciate your gratitude and support of their sacrifices. I was so moved I had to thank you over my hailer. It is people like the members of the Newburgh Yacht Club that make the day so special. Thank you all and thank you for the wonderful presentation on this web-site. Gratefully, Capt. Brian T. Young (Cortlandt Yacht Club). See you next year.
